Getting started can often be easier than staying motivated, trust me I know. This time last year I was 3 stone heavier, than I am now. Swimming has given me a new lease on life, I would like to share that with all of you. If choosing swimming as your chosen fitness tool, here are some thoughts to aid you in that process. Just swimming up and down can get boring, try varying your workouts, start by building up the distance you can swim. Then swim sets, do a swim warm up, then vary speed and add some drills. Try to build up the number of lengths and the length of time that you can swim for. Swim with friends, I was find that making arrangements to met others means I have to go. Perhaps your local pool has a swim tag / Swim fit programme these are great for getting started SMART specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timed. Example: I will swim 500 m open water event in April 2019. This would totally be realistic, if swimming with friends challenge each other, 1/2 mile, mile. Fancy something longer think the length of Windermere or the English Channel, break the distance down into achievable chunks swim 2 or 3 times a week. This gives you a reason for training, and training harder as your deadline approaches. Really important don't beat yourself up if you don't quite make it, be honest with yourself, what where the reasons you didn't make the target, re-evaluate, then set new goals, a new challenge. Remember have fun and keep swimming.
